Siamo tornati in provincia di Salerno a trovare la Pop Racing perché l’aggiornamento della Toyota di casa ha raggiunto il culmine per prestazioni e cura estetica. Votata esclusivamente ai percorsi hard, adesso questa Land Cruiser vanta una potenza di ben 300 cavalli grazie al motore BMW e uno schema sospensivo eccezionale con lunghi coilover

Antonio Poppiti vive a Olevano sul Tusciano in provincia di Salerno con la moglie e il figlio piccolo. Gestisce l’officina e carrozzeria Pop Racing, che si occupa anche di elaborazione di fuoristrada. Insieme a questi ultimi la sua grande passione sono le moto d’acqua: le restaura e le elabora con estrema cura e d’estate in una sola giornata arriva a coprire anche 70 miglia!

Due anni fa questa Toyota era già preparata in maniera esorbitante. Quando Antonio, il suo proprietario, giungeva ad un raduno non aveva il tempo di scendere dall’auto che tutti lo accerchiavano per sapere ogni minima modifica che vi aveva apportato e per scattare foto ai particolari. Non contento dei pur ottimi risultati raggiunti, Antonio è andato avanti con i lavori (di mestiere fa il meccanico nell’officina di casa) sperimentando idee tutte sue, ma anche confrontandosi con altri amici fuoristradisti appassionati del marchio giapponese, in primis siciliani e calabresi. Il risultato raggiunto ha portato ad un veicolo ulteriormente rivoluzionato nello schema sospensivo e meccanicamente potenziato e rinforzato per spingersi sempre dove gli altri non riescono ad arrivare, il tutto in totale sicurezza.

Fiore all’occhiello sono i nuovi ammortizzatori coilover Profender, regolabili in altezza e in compressione, che hanno donato un comportamento tutto nuovo alla LJ. Adesso l’escursione raggiunta (di ben 130 centimetri) permette alle ruote di copiare bene il terreno in ogni situazione, rendendo di fatto superfluo l’utilizzo dei blocchi sui differenziali, il che aiuta a preservare la meccanica. Un’articolazione così elevata è stata ottenuta grazie ai nuovi puntoni long arm con montaggio su uniball.

Il motore è ancora il 6 cilindri BMW di 3 litri (sigla M57) montato sulle Serie 5 della casa bavarese ma questa volta Poppiti, dopo ulteriori interventi tra cui la sostituzione della turbina, è riuscito a ricavare 300 cavalli ed una coppia di 600 Nm a 1.900 giri/minuto. Numeri che su strada si tramutano in accelerazioni da brivido e riprese anche a marce alte da bassissimi regimi, che consentono così un utilizzo del cambio davvero ridotto. In funzione dell’accresciuta potenza sono state apportate modifiche anche alla trasmissione, ora irrobustita a dovere con l’adozione dei ponti del Nissan Patrol GR Y60, opportunamente rivisti al loro interno.

Ma com’è alla guida questo vero e proprio mostro? All’inizio lascia un po’ spiazzati. Solo riuscire a salirci, per via delle gomme da 40 pollici che la rendono altissima da terra, è un’impresa ardua.

Al posto di guida la visibilità è buona ma le cose si complicano nei passaggi stretti in fuoristrada dove, se non si ha un navigatore a terra, bisogna scendere per controllare dove si hanno le ruote.

La guidabilità in off road risulta incredibilmente facilitata dal complesso motore/ammortizzatori. La vettura riesce a dare il meglio di sé nei passaggi tecnici in aderenza, sfruttando i rapporti ridotti (che consentono movimenti lentissimi alla vettura) e la notevole coppia sprigionata in basso dal motore, fondamentale per tirarsi fuori dai guai spesso con un sol colpo d’acceleratore.

Bisogna sottolineare però che i trasferimenti su asfalto non le sono preclusi. Grazie al nuovo pistone di sterzo idraulico fornito da Traction 4×4 lo sterzo è diventato più morbido e preciso, ma non bisogna dimenticarsi di avere tra le mani una vettura dal baricentro alto e che in breve raggiunge velocità elevate che possono essere difficili da gestire.

Viene da chiedersi quale sarà il prossimo step evolutivo di questa Toyota che ha raggiunto un’efficienza generale difficilmente eguagliabile. Giriamo la domanda al diretto interessato Antonio, che sembra combattuto: ora vorrebbe godersi la macchina così com’è dopo il tanto lavoro fatto, d’altra parte mi parla della possibilità di installare dei ponti Unimog. “È solo un’idea, aumenterebbero il peso e l’ingombro…” dice minimizzando. Ma il tarlo c’è! Conoscendo Antonio, sicuramente tra qualche mese uscirà fuori una nuova soluzione.

IN DETTAGLIO

Al posto dei ponti Toyota (che Poppiti aveva pur rinforzato efficacemente) sono stati installati gli assali del Nissan Patrol GR Y60 con all’interno semiassi rinforzati Longfield per sopportare le sollecitazioni delle gomme da 40 pollici. All’anteriore è stato installato un differenziale ARB bloccabile al 100%, mentre l’attuatore del bloccaggio del differenziale posteriore di serie ora si aziona a pressione anziché a depressione. L’aria compressa necessaria è fornita da un piccolo compressore di bordo. Nuove anche le coppie coniche della Longfield, che hanno rapporto 5.13:1.

Dopo anni di vita senza alcun problema il gruppo cambio e riduttore originale della LJ70 è stato lasciato al suo posto. Esattamente come i due alberi di trasmissione, che sono stati solamente allungati tramite appositi spessori.

La barra stabilizzatrice anteriore della vettura è di realizzazione completamente artigianale. Fissata all’estremità anteriore del telaio, è facilmente sganciabile con la vettura in piano per permettere la maggiore escursione possibile all’anteriore.

Al posto del vecchio 2.4 turbodiesel originale Toyota è stato trapiantato, seguendo la moda del momento, il BMW M57, un 6 cilindri 3.0 turbodiesel, modificato da Poppiti nell’elettronica, nella pompa d’iniezione (maggiorata) e negli iniettori. La turbina è stata sostituita con una Garrett 2260 che ora lavora con un picco di 2 bar mentre lo scarico è completamente libero e accorciato (termina sotto la portiera). L’intercooler, posizionato in alto sopra il radiatore, deriva da un Iveco Daily, mentre l’aspirazione è stata prolungata con uno snorkel della Traction 4×4.

Questa Toyota si presenta molto massiccia, in primis per le grandi Maxxis Trepador da 40 pollici che, insieme ai ponti del Patrol GR, allargano non poco la carreggiata, ma anche per i colori che creano forte contrasto e danno una sensazione di imponenza. Il frontale è dominato dal cofano rialzato con le due prese d’aria per il raffreddamento del grosso intercooler e dal paraurti accorciato e rialzato realizzato artigianalmente dallo stesso Poppiti. Dotato di stinger e di due fari supplementari a LED incassati, nasconde un verricello T-Max da 12.000 libbre con cavo tessile e inoltre fa da supporto a due . Proseguendo lungo le fiancate troviamo le indispensabili protezioni della carrozzeria: le pedane sono state fornite dalla Raptor 4×4, mentre i tree slide sono stati costruiti in casa, così come i parafanghini in acciaio saldati alla carrozzeria e il paraurti posteriore con annessi cantonali.
